Research project planning

From abstract idea to concrete plan:

• Do you have an idea for a research project?
• Speak to the Deputy Dean for Research or your Research Group Leader as soon as possible.
• Discuss whether the idea is in line with the University's strategy.
• The points of discussion are:
• whether a request is reasonable;
• where the application should be sent;
• potential partners;
• consider whether marketing is part of the project.
• consider the ethical issues as well..
• Research funding: Apply for external research funding
• Contact the support network:
• Research advisor;
• DMACS or other research center that provides financial services;
• Economist.

For most proposals, funding applications follow a standard application process.

However, there are potential complicating factors.

The research project (or an element thereof) will:

• require institutional contributions / commitments and associated supporting statements?
• involve external organizations such as other Romanian universities or external organizations?
• be performed off-site?
• involve the creation of new buildings and/or major alterations to existing buildings?
• involve the installation of large equipment that requires special access?
• may be in conflict with the existing land use plans involving external environmental, safety or planning regulatory bodies?

• involve people and/or their data (e.g. healthcare projects)?
• can it be considered politically or ethically sensitive?
• will it require non-NHS ethics approval?
• involves people who might be perceived as having a conflict of interest?
